Casper garage, van go up in flames

A family is lucky to still have a home for the New Year after a fire in Casper. Crews say the fire started in a mini-van in a garage on the 1400 block of South Fenway Street. Firefighters were able to put out the flames before they spread to a home. The garage, though, is a total loss.

Man killed after sliding off road into wall in Casper

A man is dead in a single-vehicle crash in Casper. It happened near Kelly Walsh High School yesterday morning. Police say the man was speeding on 12th Street when he slid off the road, and hit a wall in front of the high school. The Casper Star-Tribune reports the 33-year-old man was taken to Wyoming Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Speeding fines could be lowered in wY

Speeding could cost you less. Wyoming lawmakers are considering reducing the cost of a speeding fine. House Bill 12 would simplify how tickets are written and lower their amounts. The Casper Star-Tribune reports speeding by 5 miles per hour would cost you $20. That’s a big drop from the $80 it now costs you in a city and the $25 it costs on the highway.

Cody, Laramie air subsidies to stay, for now

Flights out of Cody and Laramie may remain under federal subsidies-at least in part. The U.S. Department of Transportation says United Airlines has won a bid to provide winter flights to Cody under the Essential Air program. The Casper Star-Tribune reports Laramie airport expects to also have subsidized flights through the spring. President Trump’s budget request proposed the elimination of the air subsidies, but Congress chose not to impact rural communities that deeply.

Game wardens allegedly intercept hunter with dead wolf

Game and Fish officials catch a man with a wolf, they say he illegally shot. Wolf hunting is closed for the season, but game wardens got a tip about an illegal hunting expedition. Game wardens tell the Jackson Hole News & Guide they intercepted the alleged poacher while he was driving in his pick-up. He says the man admitted there was a dead wolf in a box in the back. The hunter hasn’t been identified, but will face charges.

Casper shatters cold record

It was a cold Christmas-but not quite the coldest on record. Christmas Day’s temperature of 7 degrees tied a record set in 1987. The day after Christmas though, shattered records…with a low of 17 below zero. That beat the coldest-ever record on that date of minus 8 degrees, set in 1996. A warm-up is in site though…we’ll see highs in the Oil City of 32 degrees through Saturday…but some snow is in the forecast then too.

WY Episcopal Diocese pledges $100K for suicide prevention

A Wyoming church is pledging $100,000 for suicide prevention. The Casper Star-Tribune reports the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming is intensifying its efforts after state lawmakers cut funding dramatically earlier this year. Wyoming has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation.

Out-of-state students could see tuition break at UW

Tuition at the University of Wyoming may actually be going down for out-of-state students. The move is part of the university’s efforts to increase enrollment. The Laramie Boomerang reports the university wants to appeal to prospective students from neighboring states and Nebraska and Colorado. A consulting group recommends the university lower tuition from $15,5000 to $10,000 for out-of-state residents.

Mead proposes $66M less for WY schools

Schools in Wyoming may have tens of millions less to work with in the coming years. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports Governor Matt Mead is recommending the state legislature provide Wyoming schools with $1.76 billion for the 2019-2020 biennium. That’s $66 million less than they got the last biennium.

Sage grouse numbers expected to decline in WY

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is expecting sage grouse numbers to decline next year. Experts say the decline is part of a natural ebb and flow. They say they’re not overly concerned, but environmentalists say federal changes to protections for sage grouse could once again put the bird on the endangered species list.
