Body of Snowboarder Found near Grand Targhee

The body of the missing snowboarder has been found. 34 year old Lee Kidd went missing last Friday near Grand Targhee Resort. Searchers used K9’s to roam the area northeast of Steve Baugh Bowl. Rescuers believe Kidd fell the length of the bowl and over a 500 foot cliff into an area known as Beard’s Wheat Field. His body was located just before noon on Thursday. Kidd was a new employee of the Grand Targhee Resort.

Wyoming Schools have first decline in student enrollment in more than a decade

The state has seen its first decline in student enrollment in more than a decade. The Department of Education released figures back in October that shows public schools lost more than 700 students in the past year.

The decrease in enrollment accounted for less than 1 percent of Wyoming’s student population. The state currently has about 93,000 students. The report also says only 18 of the state’s 48 school districts experienced growth in the last year.

The areas with decreases were in parts of the state that rely on energy production, including Campbell County.

WY School Enrollment Down

Public school enrollment was down in Wyoming over the past year. That’s the first time that’s happened in over a decade. Figures from the state Department of Education indicate there were more than 700 fewer students between 2015 and 2016. And only 18 of Wyoming’s 48 school districts showed an increase in enrollment. While the department did not make a specific correlation to economic factors, the decreases did occur in areas dependent on the struggling energy industry.

Missing Snowboarder Found Dead

An employee of Grand Targhee Resort, missing since he said he would be going snowboarding last Friday, has been found dead. The body of 34-year-old Lee Kidd was found deceased and buried in snow in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness near the resort. It is presumed he had been buried since the day he was reported missing. Rescuers believe Kidd fell from the top of a mountain bowl and over a 500-foot cliff.

Gas explosion at a home in West Yellowstone

Four people, including three children, were hospitalized after a gas explosion at a home in West Yellowstone.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that firefighters were called to the mobile home Tuesday morning. He says the explosion caused a fireball that blew itself out.

Two people suffered severe injuries and two were moderately injured. All of the victims were taken to a hospital in Rexburg, Idaho.

The blast is being investigated by the fire district and the state fire marshal’s office.

The search for the missing snowboarder in near Grand Targhee hampered by winter storm

The search for the missing snowboarder in near Grand Targhee has hampered by a winter storm and by increased avalanche danger. 34 year-old Lee Kidd has been missing since last Friday. Kidd texted a friend and told him he was getting comfortable snowboarding out of bounds. The friend also said that Kidd had recieved avalnache training and knew how to build a snow cave. The search has been focused on the backside of Targhee. Kidd is a new season employee of the Grand Targhee resort.

Cheyenne-area Grass Fire

Some Cheyenne-area residents were left without power as a grass fire burned outside of town. The fire broke out early this morning near I-80 and Campstool Road and was about 100 to 200 yards in length. No structures were threatened, but power poles might have been burned, resulting in the power outages.

Cheyenne Swearing-In Tuesday

The public is invited to attend as the new city government of Cheyenne takes office next week. A swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Cheyenne Civic Center with doors opening at 5:30. Taking the oath of office will be the new mayor, Marian Orr, and six members of the Cheyenne City Council.

Wyoming Homeless Population Increases

There was a more than 14 percent increase in the number of homeless families in Wyoming between January of last year and January of this year. That’s according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The increase mirrors the slowdown in the state’s energy development. There is help on the way from HUD, which recently awarded a grant of 291-thousand to be split among five homeless support programs in Wyoming.
